On a volunteer and non-profit basis the objective/s of the society is/are:
- To relieve conditions attributable to being aged by providing seniors with transportation, wellness and recreational programs and services that relieve social isolation and loneliness.
- To do all such things as are incidental or ancillary to the attainment of the above purpose.
- Brief Overview The Charity was originally formulated in the late 1980s to help provide extras to support the South Cumberland Community Care Center (SCCCC) Adult Day Unit (ADU) clients. It was recently (2017) changed into a Society to meet Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) governance regulations. Hence, we are registered with Nova Scotia Registry of Joint Stock Companies (RJSC) as a Not for Profit Society. We are also registered with CRA as an official registered charity #88795 6647 RR0001 since 1991. In spring 2022 Nova Scotia Health (NSH) unexpectedly requested the charity vacate the SCCCC ADU as they required the space and for Covid restriction reasons. Hence our name was officially changed, on 30 July 2022, to "Parrsboro And Area Caring Society" to avoid confusion. The program will continue to support seniors with a variety of programs. There are many in the area that do not attend the SCCCC ADU and are also in need of assistance.
- We hold an Annual General Meeting (AGM), normally in June/July timeframe, to provide financial updates and to elect directors. Half of our directors come up for renewal each year. Our yearly CRA approved T3010 financial statements are available at any time from the CRA Charity Listing website. Following the AGM we hold a director's meeting to elect the officers for the next year and to discuss any new business.
- Throughout the year we hold in-person board meetings on an as required basis, normally 2-3 times. Occassionlly we will address minor issues by phone, zoom etc.
- We depend on the gracious support of the local Parrsboro and Area community to be able to operate and provide quality programs for our seniors.
